Protect pale details
Start exact before widening the whites.
Pure white, warm paper, scanner gray, and JPEG-compressed white are not the same color. A low starting tolerance protects pale artwork while you learn what the sampled field actually contains. Connected area then gives the sample a location: it removes matching pixels that touch the outside paper instead of every separate white detail in the image. Check the result on more than one preview background before changing a second control.

Sample a broad, open patch of paper or the logo field—not an edge, highlight, shadow, or antialiased letterform. An edge pixel is already mixed with the artwork, so it is a poor definition of the white you want to remove.

Inspect pale details
Use the checkerboard to expose remaining paper, then switch the preview to black or white and hold Compare. Look for pale lines, white lettering, and light fills that should remain opaque before you increase tolerance.

Expand the range carefully
Increase tolerance in small steps until the off-white paper clears. If a narrow fringe remains after the paper is included, add a little Edge Softness to make the threshold transition gradual; it is not a substitute for choosing the right paper color range.

The self-made FORMA mark uses a warm white field, dark geometry, and a coral accent. In Connected mode, the outside white disappears from the sampled field while an intentional light shape enclosed by the mark can remain. That distinction matters for supplied logos: removing every near-white pixel may erase a highlight or a white letter that belongs to the artwork.

A white field needs a location, not only a color.
Before changing a setting, decide what the selected white represents. It may be surrounding paper, a rectangle behind a logo, a deliberate interior detail, or a highlight in a photograph. The same near-white value can play different roles in one image, so the sample point and removal mode are as important as the tolerance number.

Classify the white before sampling
For a signature or scan, choose a clean margin that is representative of the paper. For a logo, choose the field outside the mark rather than a white letter inside it. Do not sample a glossy highlight in a photograph: it may be close to white but belong to the subject. If the paper visibly changes from cream to gray across the page, start with the dominant open area and assess what remains before widening the match.

Let the removal mode protect the artwork
Connected area starts at the pixel you selected and clears close matches that touch that region. It is the safer starting point for paper around handwriting and for logos with enclosed white details. All matching pixels is useful when a flat white field is truly the only near-white element in the file, such as a simple icon matte. Choosing the right mode is usually safer than raising tolerance until protected details disappear.

Correct a fringe in the right order
First include the actual paper variation with tolerance. Then use Edge Softness only for a narrow transition where matching and non-matching pixels meet. Inspect the result on checkerboard, black, and white previews because a pale halo can vanish on one background and show on another. Those preview backgrounds do not change the exported PNG; they only help you decide whether the selected range is clean enough.

White removal works best when the background is deliberately flat or only gently shaded. It is a controlled color operation, not a way to identify a subject in a complex photograph. Start from the image type you have, protect the details that share the paper color, and export the checked result as a transparent PNG.

Lift dark ink from clean white or warm paper for a document, slide, or layout. Sample the blank margin first, keep tolerance low enough to protect thin strokes, and use Connected mode when an enclosed white loop in the handwriting should remain solid.

Clear the white rectangle around a supplied logo without redrawing its vector mark. A white logo often contains small white counters, lettering, or highlights, so use the outside field as the seed and inspect the result on a dark preview before downloading.

Remove an even paper tone while preserving dark contours and intentional colored annotations. Uneven scanner lighting may require a slightly wider tolerance, but a strongly shadowed page or a photograph of paper may need image correction before color removal can produce a clean edge.

The safest white-removal workflow depends on whether white is only a background or also part of the artwork. Sample an open field, choose the region mode before widening tolerance, and inspect the transparent result on more than one preview surface.
01How do I make a white background transparent?
Upload the image and click an open part of the white background, away from text and edges. Start with the page preset, inspect the checkerboard, then raise tolerance gradually until the remaining off-white paper clears. If white appears inside the artwork, use Connected area before increasing tolerance so the removal begins only from the background you sampled.
02How can I keep white details inside a logo?
Use Connected area and sample the outside background. It follows close-matching pixels connected to that point instead of removing every white region in the file. This helps retain separate white lettering, an enclosed counter, or a highlight. Inspect on a black preview too: a detail that seems present on checkerboard can be too transparent on a solid dark surface.
03Why does scanned paper need more tolerance?
Paper texture, uneven lighting, scanner noise, and JPEG compression create several near-white colors rather than one exact white value. Increase tolerance only until the paper tone clears, because a larger range can start to affect pale ink, wash marks, or highlights. A deeply shadowed or photographed page may need lighting correction before color removal is the right tool.
04Can Edge Softness clean a gray halo?
A small amount can make threshold-edge pixels fade more gradually, but tolerance should first include the halo color itself. Try the lowest useful tolerance, then add a small amount of Edge Softness only after the paper is included. Edge Softness does not blur the whole image or turn an unrelated gray shadow into a paper match.
05Does removing white lower the image resolution?
No. The interactive preview is compact so controls remain responsive, but Download PNG recalculates the chosen color, tolerance, mode, and Edge Softness at the source image dimensions. The exported PNG keeps the original pixel width and height while adding transparency where the selected white range was removed.
