Black-field removal

Remove Black from Image Online

Clear a black matte, icon background, or dark scan field while keeping lighter artwork crisp. The starting preset is narrow and connected so dark detail elsewhere is protected.

Separate matte from shadow

Treat dark pixels as a range, not a switch.

Black backgrounds often contain lifted blacks, compression blocks, or antialiasing. A conservative preset distinguishes the matte from shadows and dark linework before you decide to broaden the match.

  1. 01

    Sample an open black area

Choose a representative matte pixel away from artwork edges and intentional shadows.

  2. 02

    Check the darkest artwork

Hold Compare and inspect dark strokes or outlines that should remain opaque.

  3. 03

    Clear lifted blacks

Raise tolerance in small steps only if compression or lighting leaves dark gray islands.

Black sample / 02

The matte clears around the symbol.

The project-made icon uses a near-black square and a warm registration symbol. Sampling the outside dark field in Connected mode leaves the enclosed symbol available for light or colored layouts.

Dark-field jobs

Built for mattes, not automatic subjects.

The tool removes the dark color you identify. It does not infer which dark pixels belong to a person, product, or foreground object.

  1. 01
    Light icons on dark tiles

Extract a pale glyph from a flat black export so it can be placed on another surface.

  2. 02
    Screen and print composites

Clear a known black matte around flares, diagrams, or simple motion-design elements.

  3. 03
    Negative scans

Remove an even dark field around light linework when the field is distinct from the mark.

Black-removal questions

Control what counts as black.

Near-black pixels vary more than they appear, especially in compressed screenshots and photographs.

01How do I make black transparent in an image?

Click an open black area, keep Connected area selected if only the outside matte should go, and increase tolerance only until the matte clears.

02Why are dark gray pixels left behind?

They are perceptually farther from the sampled black. Raise tolerance gradually or sample a more representative part of the matte.

03Will black outlines inside the artwork disappear?

They can in All matching mode. Connected area protects matching regions that are not connected to the sampled matte.

04Can I preview the result on white?

Yes. Switch the preview background to White to inspect pale artwork and dark edge residue. The preview surface does not affect export.

05Can a JPG with a black background become transparent?

Yes. JPG can be imported, and the result downloads as PNG because PNG supports transparent alpha pixels.
