Separate matte from shadow

Treat dark pixels as a range, not a switch.

Black backgrounds often contain lifted blacks, compression blocks, or antialiasing. A conservative preset distinguishes the matte from shadows and dark linework before you decide to broaden the match.

Black-removal field guide

Black can be a matte, linework, or shadow.

Near-black often looks uniform until you inspect a compressed icon, a screen capture, or a negative scan. A dark value can describe the outside matte, an intentional outline, a shadow, or a separate symbol in the same file. Treat the sample point as a location as well as a color, then use the preview backgrounds to decide which dark pixels are safe to clear. This is controlled color removal, not automatic interpretation of every dark part of a photograph. Preserve the source file while you test the export over its intended light or colored surface, because a dark fringe can be hidden until the background changes. The original remains the safe reference if a later adjustment begins to affect a dark detail.

    Find the outside dark field, not the deepest mark

    Click a broad part of the black matte that is away from an icon edge, a shadow, or dark linework. The visual darkest pixel in an image may belong to the artwork rather than the background. If the matte is lifted to charcoal by compression or lighting, sample the dominant open area first and let the tolerance control account for the smaller variations instead of beginning from a noisy boundary. A representative sample makes it easier to spot whether the next tolerance increment removes only background variation.

    Use Connected area before expanding dark matches

    Connected area clears close black matches that touch the sampled matte, making it the safer first mode when a pale icon contains black strokes, holes, or shadows. All matching pixels is appropriate only when every close black occurrence is disposable, such as a single-color export field. Switching modes can protect the artwork more effectively than raising tolerance until unrelated dark areas disappear. It also makes the result easier to reason about because the cleared area has an explicit visual origin.

    Read the remaining edge against light and dark previews

    A charcoal fringe is often easiest to see on white, while an accidental hole in a pale mark is easier to see on black. Hold Compare to identify whether a leftover patch is really matte variation or intentional detail. Increase tolerance in small increments first; add a little Edge Softness only when the selected range is correct but the threshold still looks abrupt. The preview surface never changes the downloaded PNG. Check the final download in the intended layout as well, especially when a dark edge sits over a very light color.

01How do I make black transparent in an image?

Click an open black area, keep Connected area selected if only the outside matte should go, and increase tolerance only until the matte clears.

02Why are dark gray pixels left behind?

They are perceptually farther from the sampled black. Raise tolerance gradually or sample a more representative part of the matte.

03Will black outlines inside the artwork disappear?

They can in All matching mode. Connected area protects matching regions that are not connected to the sampled matte.

04Can I preview the result on white?

Yes. Switch the preview background to White to inspect pale artwork and dark edge residue. The preview surface does not affect export.

05Can a JPG with a black background become transparent?

Yes. JPG can be imported, and the result downloads as PNG because PNG supports transparent alpha pixels.
