Work with the alpha channel

Remove color without flattening the PNG.

PNG files may already contain transparent pixels. The editor changes only the alpha of pixels matching your selected color; it does not place the image on a new background or convert it to a flat screenshot.

PNG alpha field guide

An alpha edge is both color and transparency.

A PNG can already contain transparent padding, partly transparent antialiasing, and a flat color you want to remove. Those are separate facts about the same pixels. Start by deciding whether the selected color is a disposable matte or part of an edge that already carries useful alpha; the editor will preserve existing transparency while it lowers alpha for the colors you choose. The exported file retains the source width and height, so the cleanest starting asset remains the cleanest final asset. This route is therefore useful for controlled asset cleanup, not for flattening or rebuilding a graphic from scratch. Keep the original file so a later adjustment always begins from known pixels.

    Inspect existing transparency before changing the field

    Look at the PNG on the checkerboard before sampling. Transparent corners or padding are already absent and do not need to be removed again. If the artwork uses a translucent glow, soft shadow, or antialiased outline, expect its edge pixels to carry both visible color and partial alpha. The goal is to clear the flat export field without treating every faint edge pixel as background. Keep Compare available so you can tell a newly transparent edge from transparency that existed in the source.

    Choose an opaque pixel that represents the matte

    Sample from the solid interior of the coral, blue, or other field—not from the transition around a logo. A partly transparent edge is blended with what was behind it, so it is not a reliable definition of the original matte. Begin with the suggested tolerance, then inspect nearby pixels on checkerboard before widening the range. Use Connected area if the same color appears in a separate accent that should stay visible. This preserves the distinction between a color match and a region you have decided is safe to clear.

    Check the result over a new surface before export

    Switch among checkerboard, white, and black previews to reveal a colored fringe or an edge that has become too faint. A clean result on one surface can still show a halo on another. Edge Softness is useful only after tolerance includes the unwanted matte variation; it creates a gradual threshold transition without resampling or changing the PNG dimensions. Download reruns those choices at the source size. The preview surfaces are inspection tools only and never become part of the image file.

01Will existing transparent pixels in my PNG be preserved?

Yes. The removal engine can lower existing alpha but never makes a transparent or partly transparent pixel more opaque.

02Can I remove one color while keeping the PNG dimensions?

Yes. Export reruns the same settings at the original width and height and downloads a PNG with those dimensions.

03Why does a colored fringe remain around the PNG artwork?

Edge pixels are often blended with the old field color. Increase tolerance gradually, then add a small amount of Edge Softness if the transition is still hard.

04Can I remove only one connected area in a PNG?

Yes. Choose Connected area when the same color appears elsewhere and only the region touching your sampled pixel should disappear.

05Is the PNG uploaded for processing?

No. Decode, preview, color matching, and export occur in your browser. The file is not sent to RemoveColor.
