How to Remove a White Background from a Signature
A handwritten signature on paper is a strong color-removal use case when the paper is even and the ink is visibly darker than the page. The safest workflow samples an empty margin, keeps the tolerance narrow enough to protect thin strokes, and uses Connected area so a white loop inside the handwriting is not automatically treated as paper.
Begin with an even scan or a clear margin
Use the cleanest source you have: a scan or export with a broad, evenly lit paper margin is easier to process than a photograph taken under a strong shadow. Click that blank margin rather than a fold, pencil texture, or the edge of an ink line. The margin gives the editor a representative paper sample.
Warm paper, scanner gray, and JPEG-compressed white are different pixel values. It is normal for a first pass to leave a little paper variation. Start from the dominant open area, then evaluate the remaining paper before increasing the tolerance control.
Use Connected area to protect enclosed white spaces
Connected area begins at the paper you selected and clears close matches that touch that region. It is useful for signatures because small white loops inside letters or gaps between strokes may be separate from the page background. Those details can remain if they do not connect back to the sampled paper.
All matching pixels should be reserved for a simple signature image where every close paper color is meant to disappear. It can remove separate pale details as well as the outside field, so inspect the checkerboard result before relying on it.
- Sample a margin, not a thin antialiased ink edge.
- Use Connected area first when the signature contains enclosed loops or light annotations.
Keep tolerance below the ink threshold
Raise tolerance in small steps until the off-white page clears. Going farther can begin to fade pale ink, pressure-sensitive strokes, or colored annotations that are visually close to the paper. Hold Compare to see where a new adjustment changes the original signature rather than the page.
If the paper is included but the edge of a dark stroke still looks harsh, use a little Edge Softness. It gives pixels near the selected boundary a gradual alpha change; it does not blur the handwriting or correct a paper shadow that is far from the sampled color.
Use the PNG where transparency is needed
The finished signature downloads as a transparent PNG, which you can place over a document, slide, or design without a white rectangle. RemoveColor reruns the chosen settings at the source width and height when downloading, so the export preserves the original pixel dimensions.
A heavily shadowed phone photo of paper may need lighting correction before color removal can produce a clean result. The tool removes a selected color range; it does not straighten perspective, remove folds, or identify ink independently from every variation in the paper.
